Chapter 2: The Photograph He Was Never Supposed to See

My father-in-law didn't flinch.

He simply spread the documents across the table, one by one, like he had been waiting years for this moment.

"This property was placed in a trust," he said.

"Emily's name is on every page."

My husband shot to his feet.

"That's impossible.

You never told me—"

"I never told you," his father said calmly, "because I never trusted you with it."

His mother's voice cracked.

"Harold, what have you done?"

He didn't answer her.

He looked at me instead.

"I watched what happened tonight," he said quietly.

"I've been watching for longer than you know."

My husband slammed his hand on the table.

"She's leaving.

This doesn't change anything."

Harold looked at his son with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Something colder than that.

"She's not leaving," he said.

"You are."

The room tilted.

My mother-in-law grabbed the edge of the table.

My husband's mouth opened but nothing came out.

Then Harold reached into the envelope one more time and pulled out a single photograph.

He placed it face-up in front of my husband.

My husband went completely still.

Whatever was in that photo — he had never expected his father to have it.

What was in that photograph, and what did Harold know that his son thought was buried forever?
