Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

The movers worked fast.

Within twenty minutes, the living room was half empty.

The sectional was gone.

The television was gone.

The chandelier had been carefully unhooked and wrapped in moving blankets.

Evan's family stood along the walls like furniture that hadn't been claimed yet.

Nobody helped him.

Nobody stopped me.

Linda found her voice first.

"Evan, call a lawyer.

She can't just take everything."

"She has receipts for all of it, Mom."

"I don't care what she has.

This is your house."

"The house is still mine." His voice was quieter now.

Smaller.

"She's just taking…

the stuff."

Linda turned to me.

The smile was completely gone.

"You planned this.

You've been planning this."

I picked up my mother's ceramic bowl from the counter — the one Linda had put in the donation box — and placed it carefully into my bag.

"I kept records," I said.

"That's all."

One of Evan's aunts touched his arm.

"Son, go talk to her.

Fix this."

He looked at me across the empty space where our dining table used to be.

"Natalie.

Stop.

Please."

It was the first time in four years he had said please to me without an audience waiting to see if it would work.

I stopped.

I looked at him.

And then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen — and something in his face went completely still.

He turned away from me to answer it.

But I had already seen the name.

---

What Natalie saw on that screen changed everything she thought she knew about the last four years.
