Chapter 2: The Folder on the Table

Part 2 👇

I set the folder on the table in front of Beatrice without saying a word.

She looked down at it.

Then up at me.

Then she laughed.

"What is this supposed to be?"

"Open it."

She rolled her eyes and flipped it open.

The first page was a bank statement.

Twelve months of withdrawals from Lumina's business account.

Every transfer highlighted in yellow.

Hotels.

Jewelry.

A lease deposit on an apartment I had never seen.

The laughing stopped.

"That's…

Lucas handles some of our family expenses—"

The second page was a legal document.

Her friends had gone quiet.

Someone put down a wine glass.

Beatrice's hand trembled slightly as she turned to the third page.

It was a photo.

Lucas.

A restaurant table.

A young woman.

Smiling at each other the way people smile when they believe no one is watching.

The date on the photo was three weeks ago.

One of her friends whispered, "Beatrice…"

Beatrice closed the folder.

"You don't understand what you're doing," she said, her voice dropping low.

"If you push this, Lucas will take everything.

This restaurant.

The accounts.

Everything."

I looked at her calmly.

"He can try."

Then my phone buzzed on the table.

I turned the screen toward her so she could see the name.

Her face went white.

It was Lucas.

Calling.

Right now.

And I answered it on speaker.

What Lucas said next — in front of all 38 women — is something Beatrice will never recover from.
