Chapter 2: She's Still Asking Questions
My hands were shaking so hard I could barely hold the phone.
I played the camera footage again.
And again.
Vanessa's hand on Sophie's back.
One firm push.
No hesitation.
I looked up at Vanessa.
She was still standing by the pool, arms crossed, watching me with something I can only describe as patience.
"You should put that phone down," she said quietly.
"Before you do something you regret."
"You pushed my daughter into the pool."
She didn't flinch.
"Sophie slips all the time.
You know that."
I turned to Sophie.
She was wrapped in a towel, still trembling, her eyes fixed on Vanessa's phone on the patio table.
Then it buzzed.
Sophie slid off my lap before I could stop her.
She walked straight to that phone and pressed her small hand against the screen.
"Mommy called again," she said.
I grabbed the phone.
The number was blocked.
But the last message on the screen stopped my heart cold.
*She's still asking questions.
We need to move faster.*
I looked at Vanessa.
For the first time, her patience cracked.
