Chapter 2: The Message Behind the Photograph

Leanne stared at her hands.

“Because every time Mom called you her son, I heard it as proof that I wasn’t enough anymore.”

Ben’s face tightened.

“But I never asked her to stop loving you.”

“I know,” Leanne whispered.

“I blamed a nine-year-old for something you didn’t do.”

I waited, expecting more.

Instead, Leanne pulled out her phone.

“There’s something else,” she said.

“The photograph wasn’t entirely my idea.”

She opened a message sent the morning of the wedding.

Ben’s name had been crossed off the family photo list.

Underneath it was one sentence:

“Your father wouldn’t want a stranger replacing him in the official portrait.”

Ben moved closer to me.

“Who wrote that?”

Leanne’s eyes filled with tears.

“Someone I trusted.

Someone who kept telling me Mom had replaced both Dad and me.”

“Who?” I demanded.

Before Leanne could answer, a shadow fell across the bench.

A familiar voice behind us said, “Don’t you dare blame this on me.”

Ben turned around—and the color drained from Leanne’s face.
