I cleared my throat.
Jennifer spun around.
The color drained from her face the moment she saw me standing there.
"Daniel—" she started.
"We didn't know you were—"
"I can see that," I said quietly.
Emma turned.
The pot slipped from her hands and hit the ground with a hollow clang.
Her eyes filled instantly.
"Daniel…"
I crossed the space between us in three steps and took both her hands in mine.
They were red.
Blistered.
The hands of someone who had been working like this for a long time.
I looked up at Jennifer.
"How long?" I asked.
She opened her mouth.
Closed it.
"How long has she been doing this?"
"She offered—" Jennifer said.
"She wanted to help—"
"She wanted to help." I repeated it slowly.
"In her own home."
Emma shook her head beside me.
Barely a movement.
But I saw it.
That small shake told me everything Jennifer's words were trying to hide.
I reached into my pocket and placed the velvet box gently into Emma's raw hands.
Then I turned back toward the house.
Margaret was standing in the doorway.
She had been watching the whole time.
And she didn't look surprised.
She looked afraid.
