Chapter 2: The Name on the Deed

Three minutes after that call, the ballroom doors opened.

Not with a bang.

Not with shouting.

They simply swung open — and every person near the entrance stepped back without being asked.

My father walked in wearing a plain dark suit.

No entourage.

No announcement.

Just him, and two men in security uniforms who positioned themselves quietly at each exit.

Chloe didn't recognize him.

Eleanor didn't either.

"Who is that?" Chloe whispered to her new husband.

Nobody answered.

My father crossed the room slowly, looked at my torn dress, looked at the contents of my purse still scattered across the marble floor — and said nothing for a long moment.

Then he turned to the room.

"I'd like to know," he said calmly, "who authorized a search of my daughter."

The silence was absolute.

Eleanor recovered first.

"And who exactly are you?"

My father looked at her the way a man looks at something very small.

"I'm the person whose name is on the deed to this building."

Chloe's face changed.

Then one of the security guards near the exit spoke into his radio.

"We have her on camera.

East corridor.

Two minutes ago."

Every head turned toward Amanda.

Amanda's silver purse slipped from her fingers and hit the floor.

Something small and brilliant slid out across the marble.

The room saw it before anyone could stop them.

Dominic finally looked at me.

But it was already far too late for that.
