Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

She placed a document beside my newborn son’s crib.
“Put Nathan’s name on your house,” she said.
“Then we’ll accept you and the baby as part of this family.”
I stared at her.
“That house was left to me by my father.
It isn’t yours to demand.”
Nathan stood near the window, refusing to meet my eyes.
“Tell her,” I pleaded.
“Tell your mother she has no right.”
He sighed.
“Emily, just sign it.
Why must you turn everything into a fight?”
I refused, and his mother leaned close to me.
“You’ll regret humiliating this family.”
For years, I believed those were only cruel words.
But after leaving the anniversary dinner, I checked into a small hotel with my children—and my son pulled a sealed envelope from his backpack.
“Aunt Vanessa put this in there,” he whispered.
“She said Daddy needed it tonight.”
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a recent valuation of my house, along with a legal form bearing what looked like my signature.
The form transferred partial ownership to Nathan.
But I had never signed it.
Then my phone lit up with a message from Nathan’s mother:
“Bring the children back before you discover something you can’t undo.”
A second later, someone knocked hard on the hotel door.
Who forged Emily’s signature—and who was waiting outside her door?
May you like
The truth was worse than she imagined.
