Chapter 2: What the Joint Account Already Knew

Part 2 ⬇️
I sat in the dark car with the rain hitting the windshield and my children pressed against me, both too scared to ask what was happening.
My phone lit up again.
Nathan.
I didn't answer.
Then a text came through.
*"Emily, get back inside.
You're making a scene over nothing.
Vanessa was just upset.
You know how she gets."*
Over nothing.
Twelve years of cooking for his family, paying his mother's medical bills, and swallowing every insult at every dinner table — and he called it nothing.

I almost didn't answer.
Then something made me pick up.
"Emily." Her voice was different.
Quiet.
Not the usual sharp tone she used with me.
"I saw what Vanessa did.
I've seen it for years." She paused.
"There are things about Nathan you don't know yet.
Things I should have told you a long time ago."
My hand tightened on the phone.
"What things, Margaret?"
She went silent for a moment.
"The account, Emily.
Check the joint account.
Check what's been going out every month for the past two years."
The line went d*ad.

The truth is darker than anyone at that table knew.
