Chapter 2: Check the Tea Tin

At the hospital, a nurse pulled my husband aside while I was still being examined.

I watched her speak quietly into his ear.

I watched his face go white.

"What did she say?" I asked.

He didn't answer right away.

He just walked back to me, took my hand, and held it too tight.

"They found something in your bloodwork," he said.

"Something that shouldn't be there."

The doctor came in before I could ask another question.

"We need to speak privately," she said, glancing at the door.

My mother-in-law was already in the hallway.

So was my sister.

My parents had followed the ambulance and were now standing just outside the room like nothing had happened.

The doctor closed the door on all of them.

"The substance we found," she said carefully, "is not from the kick."

I stared at her.

"It had to have been introduced over time.

Days.

Possibly longer."

My husband stood up slowly.

"You're saying someone was doing this before today."

She nodded.

I thought about every family dinner.

Every cup of tea my mother had handed me with a smile.

Every time my sister had insisted on bringing food to my house.

Then my phone lit up on the bed beside me.

A message from an unknown number.

Four words.

*Check the tea tin.*

What was in that tin — and who sent that message?

The full truth is darker than anyone expected.
