Chapter 2: The Envelope

Adrian looked at her for a long moment.
"Because going after him right now won't help you."
Emma stared at him.
Of all the things she had expected from a Marston, that was not it.
"You knew," she said slowly.
"Didn't you."
It wasn't a question.
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
That silence was its own kind of answer.
"Adrian."
"I suspected something was wrong." His voice was flat and careful.
"I didn't know it was Tessa."
Emma felt the cold move from her chest into her hands.
"How long have you suspected?"
"Long enough that I should have said something sooner." He paused.
"I'm sorry I didn't."
She laughed again, that same hollow sound.
"Everyone in my life has been keeping secrets for five months and I was the only one planning a wedding."
Adrian reached into his jacket.
He held out a folded envelope.
"Cole asked me to give you this after the rehearsal dinner Saturday night." His jaw tightened.
"I think you should read it now instead."
Emma looked at the envelope.
Her name was written on the front in Cole's handwriting.
Her hands were shaking when she took it.
May you like
She hadn't opened it yet when her phone rang.
It was Tessa.
