Chapter 2: The Sentence Ryan Heard

Ryan stepped toward Paige.

“What did you just say?”

Paige’s face tightened.

“Nothing.

Brooke misunderstood me.”

“No,” Ryan said.

“I heard you say, ‘Maybe now she’ll finally need surgery—and everyone will stop fussing over that stupid shoulder.’”

A horrified murmur moved through the guests.

My knees weakened.

Paige hadn’t pushed me as a careless joke.

She had wanted to make my inj*ry worse.

“Marissa needs a doctor,” Natalie said, holding the towel around me.

Paige looked toward the waiting chairs.

“The ceremony starts in fifteen minutes.

Can’t someone take her after?”

Ryan stared at her.

“You’re worried about the ceremony?”

Mom touched his arm.

“Ryan, emotions are high.

Paige didn’t mean—”

“I know exactly what she meant,” Brooke interrupted.

Paige spun toward her.

“Be quiet.”

Brooke’s hands began to shake.

“You told me yesterday you were going to teach Marissa a lesson.

I thought you meant embarrassing her in the photographs.”

“You’re lying!” Paige snapped.

Then the wedding photographer stepped forward, holding his camera against his chest.

“I don’t think she is,” he said.

“I was testing my audio near the bridal suite this morning.”

Paige went pale.

Ryan’s voice dropped.

“What did you record?”

The photographer looked at me, then pressed a button—and Paige’s voice came through the camera.

But the first sentence wasn’t about the pool.

What Marissa heard next exposed a secret far worse than the cruel prank.
