Chapter 7: The Hearing That Changed Everything

The next morning, I sat beside Evelyn in Meridian’s boardroom.
Dad and Mom were behind me, while Vanessa and Owen sat across the table with separate attorneys.
The board chair adjusted his glasses.
“Ms.
Grant, present your findings.”
Leah connected her tablet to the wall screen.
“The withdrawal message came from Vanessa Bennett’s phone.
Owen Price supplied Claire’s employee number and Meridian files.
Both attempted to erase their conversation.”
Owen’s attorney stood.
“My client denies directing Ms.
Bennett.”
Monica placed the backup drive on the table.
“Then let him explain his own voice.”
The recording played.
Owen promised Vanessa my position, asked for my recovery answers, and instructed her to send the false complaint during graduation.
The board chair looked at Owen.
“Did you make that call?”
“The recording may have been altered.”
I opened my laptop.
“It wasn’t.”
Owen leaned forward.
“You are hardly an impartial expert.”
“No, but the independent laboratory listed in front of you is.”
Evelyn passed the certified report to the board chair.
Owen’s attorney read the first page, then whispered into his client’s ear.
Vanessa pushed back her chair.
“Owen manipulated me.”
I faced her.
“Did he make you tear up my offer?”
“No.”
“Did he make you send the withdrawal?”
“He promised me a job.”
“Did he make you use my identity for a loan?”
Mom gasped.
Vanessa’s attorney touched her arm, but she pulled away.
“I needed money.”
The bank investigator entered and placed two applications on the table.
“The first loan used Richard Bennett’s signature.
The second used Claire Bennett’s personal information and requested seventy-five thousand dollars.”
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“You were going to take more?”
“I was going to repay everything after Meridian hired me.”
Evelyn’s voice was quiet.
“Meridian was never going to hire you.
Owen had no authority to offer Claire’s position.”
Vanessa turned to him.
“You told me the board approved it.”
Owen gathered his papers.
“This meeting is finished.”
Two corporate security officers stepped in front of the door.
The board chair removed Owen’s access badge from the table.
“You are terminated for misconduct, falsifying company records, unauthorized access, and attempting to frame a new employee.
Meridian is referring the evidence to federal investigators and seeking repayment of all legal and security costs.”
Owen looked at me.
“You think you won?
Companies protect themselves, Claire.
The moment you become inconvenient, Evelyn will discard you too.”
I closed my laptop.
“Maybe.
But she didn’t need to destroy me to feel important.”
One officer opened the door.
Owen straightened his jacket.
“This company will regret choosing her over me.”
“No,” Evelyn said.
“We regret choosing you.”
The officers escorted him out.
Vanessa’s attorney asked for a private agreement, but I shook my head.
“No secret deal.”
Vanessa gripped the arms of her chair.
“You would really let your own sister face charges?”
“You made me your victim before you remembered I was your sister.”
Mom moved to the table and placed Vanessa’s unlocked phone beside Leah.
“The messages are all there.
I will testify to what I did and what Vanessa asked me to do.”
Vanessa stood.
“You always choose Claire!”
Mom’s voice broke.
“No.
That is the tragedy.
I should have chosen what was right years ago.”
A bank investigator stepped beside Vanessa.
“You must come with us to answer questions about the applications.”
Vanessa looked at me one last time.
“When they get tired of applauding you, you’ll have no family left.”
Dad took my hand.
“She will have the family that finally learned how to stand beside her.”
Vanessa was led through the door.
Mom watched her go, then turned to me with swollen eyes.
“There is one more signature you need to see.”
May you like
She opened her handbag and removed a notarized document.
It transferred my late grandmother’s education fund—every remaining dollar—into Vanessa’s account.
