Chapter 2: The Photograph That Should Not Exist

PART 2 ⬇️

Juliette's groom hadn't moved.

He stood at the altar with his hands at his sides, staring at the forged death certificate like a man watching the floor crack open beneath him.

"Thomas," Juliette said sharply.

"Say something."

He didn't.

Marcus laid a second document on the table.

Then a third.

"These are the original insurance filings," he said.

"Submitted four days after the fire.

Signed by Juliette Mercer.

Beneficiary listed as Juliette Mercer."

Someone in the crowd gasped.

My father took a step forward.

"Juliette — "

"Don't." Her voice came out hard and fast.

"Don't you dare stand there and act like you didn't know."

The room shifted.

I looked at my father.

His face didn't deny it.

That was when I felt the floor move under me — not from pain, but from something I hadn't prepared for.

He had known.

Maybe not everything.

Maybe not how far she had gone.

But he had known enough to stay silent.

Marcus touched my arm quietly.

"There's one more file."

He placed it in my hands.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Taken at the hospital.

Three days after the fire.

Standing beside my bed — while I lay unconscious and unidentified — was Juliette.

She had been there.

She had seen me alive.

And she had walked away.

What Caroline found on the next page of that file exposed everything — and it destroyed more than just the wedding.
