Chapter 2: The Envelope With My Name On It

"If there's no room for me," I said, "then there's no room for any of this."
Brian's jaw tightened.
"Mom, you're making a scene in front of our guests."
"I made breakfast, Brian.
I made lunch.
I made every single thing on that table." My voice stayed calm, but my hands were shaking.
"And I can unmake it just as easily."
Melissa stood up.
"This is embarrassing.
Can someone please talk to her?"
Nobody moved.
Then the young man sitting in my chair slowly rose to his feet.
His face was pale.
"Ma'am," he said carefully, "I think there's something you should know about why I'm here tonight."
Brian's head snapped toward him.
"Don't."
The young man looked at Brian, then back at me.
"She deserves to know."
"I said don't." Brian's voice dropped to something I hadn't heard before.
Not irritation.
Something closer to fear.
I looked at the young stranger.
"Know what?"
He reached into his jacket pocket and placed a folded envelope on the table.
My name was written on the front in handwriting I recognized immediately.
Henry's handwriting.
My breath stopped.
That envelope had not been there a moment ago.
And from the way Brian's face had gone completely white, he had seen it before.
He had seen it — and he had never given it to me.
---
What was inside that envelope — and how long had Brian been hiding it?
The full truth is in the link below.
