Chapter 2: What Was Folded Inside the Jacket

PART 2 ⬇️

The ballroom stayed silent for a long moment.

Then Richard pushed back his chair and stood up.

"What did you just say?"

"You heard me," I said.

"The building.

The vineyard.

The hotel down the road.

All mine."

Chase looked at his father.

His father looked at me.

Patricia's smile was completely gone.

Richard crossed the room slowly.

When he reached me, he lowered his voice so only I could hear.

"I don't know what game you're playing, old man.

But you'd better be very careful."

"I'm not playing anything," I said.

"I'm just correcting the record."

Emily stepped forward.

"Dad — what's happening?"

I turned to her.

"Nothing you need to worry about tonight."

But Chase grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

It was a small gesture.

Quick.

The kind a man makes without thinking because he's done it a hundred times before.

Emily didn't pull away.

That was the moment I reached into my jacket.

Not for the document about the loan.

For the other one.

The one my attorney had found three days ago, buried inside Richard's company filings — a transfer of assets, dated six weeks before the wedding, signed in Emily's name without her knowledge.

Richard saw the papers in my hand.

His face went the color of ash.

"Where did you get those?" he whispered.

---

What Richard had done to Emily behind her back is worse than anyone at that wedding could have imagined.
