Chapter 2: What He Signed in October

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat in Henry's old armchair with my phone in my lap, staring at Megan's messages until the words blurred.

*Ask your son what he signed in October.* October.

That was eight months ago.

Eight months before I changed my will.

Eight months before any of this.

I called Robert at seven the next morning.

He picked up on the first ring, which told me he had been waiting.

"Mom—"

"What did you sign in October, Robert?"

Silence.

"Robert."

"It wasn't what it looks like."

Those five words turned my stomach.

"I haven't told you what I think it looks like," I said.

"So what is it?"

He exhaled slowly.

"Megan found someone.

A property consultant.

They said if I filed a co-ownership interest claim based on years of maintenance contributions and improvements, the cottage could legally be considered partially mine before you passed."

I couldn't speak.

"I never filed it, Mom.

I signed the consultation agreement, but I never submitted anything to the court."

"But you were going to."

He didn't answer.

That silence told me everything Megan's message had not.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A forwarded document.

From Megan.

A signed assessment dated October 14th, with Robert's signature at the bottom — and a court submission stamp I wasn't supposed to see.

He had filed it.

He had actually filed it.
