Chapter 1: The Night They Changed the Locks

"My son is with another woman now.
She is having his baby.
So pack your suitcase and leave our property."
Those were the first words out of my mother-in-law Margaret's mouth when I returned from my work trip, discovering that the locks had been changed on the home where Ethan and I had spent the last seven years.
It was approaching 11:00 PM, and a heavy storm was drenching Houston, Texas.
My flight back from Dallas had been delayed, and my only goal was to get some rest.
Yet when I pulled up to the River Oaks home, my key refused to slide into the lock.
I pounded on the door multiple times.
Eventually, my mother-in-law, Margaret, appeared, wearing the exact silk robe I had gifted her the previous Christmas.
She kept the door firmly shut between us.
"Why doesn't my key work?" I demanded.
"Where is Ethan?"
She offered a wicked smirk, looking as if she had been eagerly awaiting this confrontation.
"Ethan is upstairs with Chloe.
They made the choice today to start fresh together.
She can give him the child he deserves."
It felt as though my heart completely dropped in pure sh0ck.
Ethan and I were still lawfully wed.
For seven years, I had quietly absorbed his mother's endless critiques, her venomous remarks about my supposed failure to conceive, and her constant jabs that a "barren" woman should be praising the heavens that a man would even tolerate her.
That was when Ethan stepped out onto the covered porch.
He was dressed in a brand-new button-down, his hair still damp from a shower, wearing a pompous expression I had never seen on him since the day we wed.
"Claire, don't start screaming and making a scene," he said.
"I was planning to tell you all this tomorrow.
Chloe is three months pregnant.
Her dad owns major import businesses over in Austin, and he's going to help us scale up.
I need a proper family."
Then he produced a small paper envelope from his slacks.
"There's $2,500 in here.
Take it as a severance package and go find a hotel."
$2,500.
For seven devoted years of marriage.
For bailing him out when he was drowning in credit card debt.
For silently enduring Margaret's cruelty.
Chloe stepped into the doorway behind him, cradling her stomach with one hand.
"Try not to take it to heart," she said softly.
"Ethan just chose a different path.
Besides, this house needs a mother who can actually raise a family in it."
Margaret let out a condescending little snicker.
"And a woman of his own caliber.
Not just some ordinary employee mooching off my son."
That was the exact moment clarity h!t me.
They honestly and truly believed Ethan was the one footing the bill for this estate.
And I certainly wasn't some "ordinary employee."
The luxury home, the expensive car Ethan paraded around in, and the golden opportunities that had quietly boosted his career were not his own doing.
For seven long years, I had kept my identity as the president of Sterling Crest Group completely under wraps.
Ethan always struggled with feeling inferior to other men, and I desperately wanted to ensure his love was for me — not my massive bank account.
I had been terribly mistaken.
I refused to give them the satisfaction of an argument.
I simply grabbed my luggage and walked through the heavy rain to the street corner.
A tinted black sedan smoothly pulled up in front of me.
My assistant, Daniel, stepped out immediately, popping open a large umbrella.
"Madam President?
Why are you standing out on the street with your bags?"
I slipped into the backseat, patted my wet face dry, and stared up at the illuminated windows of the estate one final time.
"Ethan just moved his pregnant girlfriend into a Sterling Crest Group property, and his mother changed the locks to k!ck me out."
Daniel visibly paled in absolute sh0ck.
"Would you prefer I contact our private security?"
"No.
First thing tomorrow, I need our legal team over there with the original property deed and the house inventory.
As of this exact second, cancel all his corporate credit lines, report the company vehicle, and cut off every single private service the organization has been covering."
Daniel paused for just a moment in the front seat.
"Consider it done, Madam President."
As my driver pulled us away into the night, I watched Margaret pull the curtains shut, looking entirely victorious.
They genuinely believed they had just exiled me from my own life.
They had no idea what was waiting for them in the morning.
