Chapter 2: The Signature That Was Never Mine

My attorney called at 7:04 in the morning.
I had barely slept.
"I got your message," Gerald said.
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure," I told him.
"How long will it take?"
"Given the structure of Redwood Capital, I can have the listing paperwork ready within 48 hours.
But if Brandon finds out before we—"
"He won't," I said.
"He thinks I'm sitting at home feeling ashamed of myself."
Gerald went quiet for a moment.
"What happened to your face?"
I hadn't told him.
But Gerald had been my attorney for twenty-two years, and he knew me well enough to ask the question that way.
"Nothing that changes what I want done," I said.
He didn't push.
He just said he would call me by noon.
I was still at my desk when my phone buzzed again.
Not Gerald this time.
It was a number I didn't recognize, but the text that came through stopped me cold.
*He's been trying to get that deed transferred for eight months.
I have the paperwork.
You need to see it before you do anything.*
I stared at the screen.
No name.
No explanation.
Then a second message arrived, and this one had a photo attached.
It was a document.
At the top were the words *Power of Attorney*, and below that, in the signature line, was my name.
Except I had never signed it.
