Chapter 1: The Photograph She Refused
My stepdaughter humiliated me at her graduation by pushing me out of her photo for her adoptive father.
She had no idea my response would ruin both of their lives by midnight.
At my stepdaughter’s graduation, I moved beside her for one photo.
She pushed my hand away.
'I want one with my real father.'
My heart tightened.
I spent ten years caring for her like my own daughter.
'Not even one picture with me?' I asked softly.
She turned away in icy silence.
I nodded slowly and swallowed the pain.
'Then let him pay for your graduation trip too.'
I turned and walked away.
She remained frozen in front of the crowd.
That night, my phone rang with desperate calls.
She was about to discover why those words meant far more than she realized.
