Chapter 2: The Statement

**— PART 2 —**
For a single second, nobody moved.
My father stood frozen at the edge of the driveway, his briefcase hanging loose in his hand, his eyes moving slowly from my face to Vanessa's grip on my wrist.
"Richard." Vanessa's voice shifted instantly — soft, warm, almost sweet.
She released my arm and smoothed the front of her gown in one practiced motion.
"Darling, I was just explaining to her that she needs to stay in her room when we have guests arriving."
"She's not a guest," my father said quietly.
"She's my daughter."
Something flickered across Vanessa's face.
Not guilt.
Something colder.
"Daddy, please—" I started.
"Go inside," he said, his voice low and steady.
But he wasn't looking at me.
He was looking at Vanessa.
I stumbled through the front door, my legs barely holding me.
Chloe and Marcus had gone quiet in the living room, both watching from behind the couch.
Then I heard it.
My father's voice dropping to almost nothing out on the driveway.
"The lawyers called me today, Vanessa."
A long silence.
"They said the trust account — Elena's mother's trust — has been accessed.
Repeatedly.
For six years."
I pressed myself against the wall and stopped breathing.
Vanessa's heels clicked slowly across the stone entryway.
Then she spoke, barely above a whisper.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"I have the statements," my father said.
"Every single one." 😨
