Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I held up the document.

Vanessa lunged for it, but the man in the suit stepped between us.

“Don’t touch that,” he warned.

My father finally found his voice.

“What is going on?”

“This letter came from my grandmother’s attorneys,” I said.

“It concerns the trust she created for me before she passed.”

Vanessa shook her head too quickly.

“There was no trust.

Your grandmother left you nothing.”

The man opened his folder.

“That is not true, Mrs.

Carter.”

Brielle’s smile disappeared.

I turned to my father.

“For six years, every letter from the trust was sent to this house.

I never received a single one.”

His eyes moved slowly toward Vanessa.

“You told me those envelopes were about unpaid bills.”

“They were!” Vanessa cried.

“Then explain this.” I placed a photocopy on the table.

It showed my name beneath a withdrawal request—but the signature was not mine.

My father stared at it.

“Vanessa…

whose handwriting is that?”

Before she could answer, the man’s phone rang.

He checked the screen and put the call on speaker.

A woman’s voice filled the room.

“We found the original security recording,” she said.

“It shows exactly who submitted the documents.”

Vanessa gripped the chair as the man turned the phone toward us.

What did the recording reveal—and why was Vanessa so terrified of Ms.
