Chapter 7: The Price of a Mother’s Silence

Diane refused to enter the bank until Vanessa moved away from the door.

“You used my debt against me,” she said.

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I helped you.”

“You paid me to wear your coat and sign Maya’s name.”

“You knew what you were doing.”

“I knew you said it was a harmless correction.”

Caleb stepped beside Diane.

“Why did you record her?”

“Because Vanessa never helps anyone without keeping something over them.”

Diane handed the phone to Angela.

The recording began with Vanessa’s voice.

Once the account is empty, Robert will take the blame.

His signature is already on the old withdrawals.

Dad shut his eyes.

My voice came out cold.

“You planned to blame him?”

Vanessa glanced toward her lawyer.

“Private family arguments are not evidence.”

Mr.

Sloan picked up his briefcase.

“You told me every signature was authentic.

Our relationship ends now.”

“You can’t leave.”

“I just did.”

He walked toward the parking lot without looking back.

Two days later, we sat in a county courtroom for an emergency hearing.

Vanessa arrived with a new attorney and a stack of folders.

Her attorney stood.

“The funds were used for Maya’s benefit over many years.”

Angela’s lawyer, Grace, placed the account records before the judge.

“Then Mrs.

Brooks should produce receipts.

Instead, we have payments for a luxury cruise, a personal vehicle, and a deposit on a property titled only to her.”

Vanessa whispered sharply to her attorney.

The judge looked over his glasses.

“Mrs.

Brooks, did Maya travel on that cruise?”

“No, Your Honor, but parents are permitted reasonable reimbursement.”

“With a document signed by someone impersonating her?”

“The identity of that woman has not been established.”

The courtroom door opened.

Diane walked to the front with a bank investigator.

“I was the woman in the blue coat,” she said.

Vanessa stood.

“She is lying because she wants money.”

Diane turned toward her.

“You already paid me.”

She placed a deposit receipt on the clerk’s desk.

Vanessa’s attorney requested a recess.

The judge denied it.

Dad was called next.

Grace held up the custody petition.

“Did you know where Angela was when you signed this?”

“Yes.”

“Did Vanessa know?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa rose again.

“Robert, think carefully.”

The judge’s voice hardened.

“Sit down, Mrs.

Brooks.”

Dad looked at me.

“I lied because I was ashamed of my affair with Vanessa.

I let Angela be called unstable because the truth made me look worse.”

My fingernails pressed into my palms.

Grace placed the altered agreement beside the original.

“Did Angela agree to surrender her parental rights for money?”

“No.

That page was added later.”

Vanessa’s attorney stood.

“Mr.

Brooks is trying to protect himself.”

Dad nodded.

“I am responsible for my silence.

But Vanessa created the false page.”

The judge compared the staple marks on both versions.

Vanessa suddenly gathered her folders.

“I need air.”

A court officer stepped in front of the aisle.

“You need to remain seated.”

Her face twisted toward me.

“After everything I gave you, this is how you repay me?”

“You gave me a story in which my mother didn’t love me.”

“I raised you!”

“You controlled me.”

Vanessa pointed at Angela.

“She will disappoint you.

When she does, don’t come back to me.”

Angela stood.

“Maya will never need to earn a place in my life.”

The judge ordered the transfer canceled, froze Vanessa’s property accounts, and prohibited the destruction or removal of financial records.

He also referred the forged documents to county investigators.

Vanessa’s attorney leaned toward her.

“Do not touch your phone.”

Too late.

Vanessa pulled it from her purse and began deleting messages.

Caleb lifted his own phone from the second row.

“They’re backed up to the family cloud account.”

Vanessa stopped.

The judge stared down from the bench.

“Mrs.

Brooks, hand your phone to the officer.”

She held it against her chest.

“No.”

The officer extended his hand.

“Now.”

Vanessa surrendered it, but her eyes stayed fixed on Caleb.

“You think Angela’s return makes this family whole?” she said.

“Wait until Maya learns what Robert did with her very first letter.”

I turned toward Dad.

His lips parted.

Vanessa smiled as the officer escorted her through the side door.

May you like

Dad looked at the floor.

“She’s telling the truth.”
