Chapter 2: The Key Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Evelyn's chair scraped back so hard it nearly toppled.
She was on her feet in seconds, one finger jabbing toward the lawyer.
"This is a lie.
That document is fake." Her voice cracked at the edges.
"Robert — tell them.
Tell them right now."
Every head in the room turned to my father.
He didn't speak.
"Robert." Evelyn's voice dropped to something dangerous.
"Say something."
My father slowly set down his fork.
When he finally looked up, his face had gone pale — not with anger, but with something that looked almost like relief.
"I signed it, Evelyn," he said quietly.
"Six months ago.
It was the right thing to do."
The room went completely still.
Evelyn stared at him as if he had spoken in a language she didn't understand.
Then her expression shifted — and what replaced the shock was something colder.
Something calculated.
She turned back to me.
"You think this is over?" she said, her voice dropping to a low, controlled whisper.
"You have no idea what your mother actually left behind in this house."
She reached into her jacket pocket and placed a small brass key on the table.
None of us had ever seen it before.
