Chapter 2: The Letter in the Lining

Dad shut the door behind him and laid the bag on her bed.

“Don’t touch that!” my stepsister screamed.

“Mom bought it for me!”

I stood in the hallway, clutching the torn pieces of my gown.

My hands were shaking.

Dad looked at her.

“You said shredding someone’s special dress was funny.

Is it still funny when something you love is at risk?”

“It was only a joke,” she muttered.

“She can buy another one.”

“With what money?” Dad asked.

“The graduation money that disappeared from her envelope?”

Her face went pale.

My stepmother rushed into the room and grabbed Dad’s arm.

“Put those shears down,” she demanded.

“You’re frightening her.”

Dad pulled away.

“I’m not here to ruin the bag.

I’m here to find what she hid inside it.”

He turned the bag over and carefully cut one stitch in the lining.

My stepsister lunged forward, but Dad stepped back.

A folded envelope slipped onto the floor.

I recognized the college seal immediately.

“That’s mine,” I whispered.

“I never received it.”

Dad opened the envelope and read the first line.

Then he stared at my stepsister.

“You told her she was rejected,” he said.

“But this letter says something very different.”

Before he could read the rest aloud, my stepmother suddenly said, “She didn’t hide it.

I did.”
