Chapter 2: What Seraphina Screamed

They carried me out on a stretcher while Seraphina's wedding cake was still being cut.

I heard Eleanor's voice before I saw her face.

"What is happening?

Who called these people?"

An officer stepped in front of her.

"Ma'am, please stay where you are."

"This is a private estate.

You have no right—"

"We have a warrant."

The room went silent.

Three hundred guests.

Champagne glasses still in hand.

Every eye on Eleanor Sterling as an officer placed a document against her chest.

Julian appeared at the edge of the corridor.

He saw the stretcher.

He saw me.

Then he saw the badge.

Something shifted in his face.

Not guilt.

Not relief that I was alive.

Calculation.

"Audrey." He moved toward me.

"Audrey, we can talk about this."

I looked at him.

"There's nothing to talk about, Julian."

"Whatever you think you found—"

"I didn't think anything." My voice was steady even through the contraction.

"I audited it.

Every transfer.

Every signature."

His face went pale.

"You need to listen to me."

"I did listen.

For three years."

The paramedics kept moving.

Julian grabbed the side of the stretcher.

An officer pulled him back immediately.

That was when Seraphina pushed through the crowd in her wedding gown, mascara streaking her face, and screamed one sentence that made every guest go completely still.

What she said next changed everything — and exposed a secret the Sterlings had hidden long before I ever married into this family.

What Seraphina revealed in that ballroom was only the beginning.
