They carried me out on a stretcher while the Sterlings' wedding fell apart around them.
I heard Eleanor before I saw her.
"What is the meaning of this?
This is a private event!"
An officer's voice was flat.
"Ma'am, step back."
"Do you know who we are?"
"Yes.
That's why we're here."
Through the ballroom doorway I caught a glimpse of Seraphina — still in her wedding gown, mascara streaking her face, her new husband gripping her arm.
Guests pressed against the walls.
Two officers were already at the estate office door with a bolt cutter.
Then Julian appeared at the end of the corridor.
He saw me on the stretcher.
He saw the officers.
He saw the briefcase in the paramedic's hand.
His face changed in a way I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Pure, cold fear.
He took one step toward me.
"Audrey—"
"Sir." An officer blocked him.
"Don't."
Julian's eyes stayed on mine.
"You don't understand what you've done."
I held his gaze.
"I understand exactly what I've done."
A contraction hit.
I turned away from him and focused on breathing.
That was the last time I looked at my husband as a wife.
