Chapter 2: One Word. Willowbrook.

My hands were shaking as I opened the first folder.

Inside were surveyor maps of Willowbrook with boundary lines redrawn in red ink.

Beside them sat a printed valuation report.

Someone had highlighted one figure in yellow: $4.2 million.

Emma spoke quietly behind me.

"Dad found a developer eight months ago.

Before you and Stephanie were even engaged."

I turned around.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying the proposal wasn't about love, Charles." She pointed to a separate document near the edge of the desk.

"That's a power of attorney draft.

Stephanie's name is listed as the authorized agent." She paused.

"For Margaret."

The room went cold.

"Those health documents she brought to your mother," Emma continued, "weren't insurance forms.

If Margaret had signed them, Stephanie would have had legal authority to make decisions on her behalf.

Financial decisions.

Property decisions."

I looked back at the desk.

There was a sticky note pressed to the corner of one folder.

It had a date written on it — the date of our wedding — and three words beneath it: *transfer ready to file.*

My throat tightened.

"She needed to be my wife first."

Emma nodded slowly.

"Once you were married, challenging anything would have been much harder for you.

And nearly impossible for Margaret."

I picked up my phone to call Daniel Mercer.

Then I noticed something I had missed on the far side of the desk — a second envelope, already opened, already signed.

I looked at Emma.

"Whose signature is that?"

She didn't answer.

Her eyes told me everything.

What Charles found on that second document changed the entire direction of his fight for Willowbrook.
