Chapter 2: What the Desk Was Hiding

Emma grabbed my arm.
"Don't let her in," she whispered.
"She can't know I showed you this."
I was already moving toward the door.
"Charles, wait—"
I opened it.
Stephanie stood in the hallway in a gray coat, her eyes moving from my face to Emma's, then to the desk behind us.
She saw the documents.
She saw the architectural drawings still spread open on the desk.
Her expression didn't break.
It just went very still.
"You weren't supposed to be here," she said quietly.
"No," I said.
"I wasn't supposed to find out."
She stepped inside and closed the door behind her.
"Emma, you had no right."
Emma didn't answer.
Stephanie turned back to me, and something shifted in her face.
Not guilt.
Not shame.
Something colder than that.
"You have no idea how much that land is worth, Charles."
"It's not land," I said.
"It's my mother's home."
"Your mother is sixty-nine years old and living alone on forty acres she can barely manage."
"She manages it fine."
"For now." She picked up the care-home brochure without flinching.
"We were going to make sure she was taken care of."
"In a facility forty miles away.
While you built fifty-eight houses on her farm."
She set the brochure down.
"The paperwork isn't finalized."
"The f0rged signature is."
The room went silent.
Then her phone buzzed on the desk.
She glanced at the screen and something in her eyes changed.
She didn't answer it.
But I saw the name.
It wasn't Richard.
It was someone I had never heard of — and the message preview read: *She signed the second one.*
---
What did Margaret sign — and who is the second person involved?

The full truth is darker than anything Charles expected.
