Chapter 2: The Envelope She Thought I'd Never Find

While the nurse was examining Lily's shoulders, my phone lit up.

Claire.

Then Diane.

Then Claire again.

I let every call go to voicemail.

At 1:17 a.m., a text came through from Claire.

"Daniel, I can explain.

Please don't do anything stupid.

Think about the kids."

I read it once, then set the phone face-down on the chair beside me.

Lily was asleep by the time the doctor finished.

I sat in the quiet of that small room and opened my laptop.

The backup server had flagged one more file I hadn't watched yet — recorded at 7:44 p.m., nearly two hours after Claire and Marcus had left.

Diane had come back.

Not to check on the children.

She walked straight to the kitchen counter, picked up a white envelope, and slipped it into her bag.

Then she looked directly at the camera she believed was dead and said something that made my chest go cold.

Diane said quietly.

"Claire already signed it.

By morning, Daniel won't have a claim on anything."

I didn't know what was in that envelope.

But I knew where Diane lived.

And I knew that whatever Claire had signed, she had done it while our daughter was standing barefoot in that kitchen, holding our son alone in the dark.

The doctor stepped back in and asked if I had any questions.

I had only one — and it wasn't for him.

---

What was in that envelope, and what had Claire already signed?
