Chapter 2: The Envelope in the Drawer

Dad opened the door and stared at the foil trays in my arms.
“Rick, what did you do?”
“I brought Thanksgiving to the man who taught me what family means.”
His eyes filled, but before he could answer, my phone rang.
Karen.
“Bring that food back right now,” she snapped.
“My parents are sitting at an empty table.”
“You told my father he wasn’t welcome.”
“I was protecting everyone from embarrassment.”
I put the call on speaker.
Dad lowered his head.
“I’m sorry, Rick.
I never wanted trouble.”
Then Karen said something that made him look up.
“He agreed to stay away.
Ask him what else he agreed to.”
The line went silent.
I turned to Dad.
“What does she mean?”
His hand began to shake.
He reached into a kitchen drawer and removed a sealed envelope with Karen’s name written across it.
“She didn’t just call last night,” he said quietly.
“She came here.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did she want?”
Dad placed the envelope in my hand.
“She wanted my signature—and she told me you had already approved everything.”
Before I could open it, someone pounded on the front door.
