Chapter 2: The Man Who Looked Relieved

Camille yanked her wrist free and stepped back, but her eyes didn't show anger.
They showed calculation.
"You have no idea what you've just done," she said quietly.
Adeline didn't move.
Nico reached up and touched Adeline's arm.
"It's fine," he said.
"Let her go."
"It is not fine," Adeline said.
"It has never been fine."
Camille smoothed her dress and smiled at the thirty guests still watching.
"She's unstable," she announced.
"I'll have her removed by morning."
But Adeline had stopped listening to Camille.
She was watching the man standing near the far door.
He hadn't moved during the whole scene.
He hadn't looked shocked.
He hadn't looked angry.
He had looked relieved — just for a second — when Camille raised her hand.
Adeline recognized him.
He had been in the corridor two nights ago.
Near the medication cabinet.
At 2 a.m.
She reached into her uniform pocket and felt the small sealed bag.
Two tablets.
Still there.
She looked at Nico.
He was watching Camille leave.
He still didn't know.
And the man by the door was now looking directly at Adeline.
Not with guilt.
With warning.
