Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I stared at the photograph.

“Whose house is that?”

“Ours, if you stop being selfish,” Ashley said.

“The seller accepted our offer yesterday.”

My hand tightened around the edge of the table.

“You made an offer without having the money?”

George leaned forward.

“Your house has enough equity to solve that problem.”

“My house has no equity for you.

It belongs to me.”

Daniel finally looked up.

“Mom, we only need part of the sale proceeds for the down payment.

You’d still have enough for a condo.”

“You’ve already divided money you don’t own?”

Ashley pushed another paper toward me.

“We have thirty days to complete the purchase.

If you refuse, we lose our deposit.”

“That sounds like your consequence, not mine.”

Patricia’s face hardened.

“Would you really let your grandchildren suffer over a building?”

Before I could answer, Daniel’s phone lit up beside his plate.

A message from someone named Mark appeared on the screen:

DID YOUR MOTHER SIGN THE GIFT LETTER YET?

THE BANK NEEDS IT TOMORROW.

Daniel snatched up the phone, but I had already read it.

“What gift letter?” I asked.

Nobody spoke.

Then I noticed a second document beneath the photograph.

My name was printed at the bottom—and above it was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

“What did you do?” I whispered.

Daniel went pale, but Ashley reached for the paper before I could take it.

What had Ashley submitted in Mrs.
