Chapter 6: The Deal She Thought I Would Take

The full hearing took place four days later.

Rebecca arrived in a cream suit with Tessa behind her and Nolan Vale beside their lawyer.

Grace whispered, “Nolan has hired his own attorney.

That means he’s frightened.”

Rebecca looked across the aisle at me.

“Last chance, Daniel.”

“For what?”

“Sign the settlement.

I keep the house and primary custody.

You stop digging, and I won’t ask prosecutors to charge Elaine for signing false documents.”

Grace placed her folder on the table.

“You’re offering silence in exchange for property?”

Rebecca shrugged.

“I’m offering peace.”

“You used our son’s identity,” I said.

Her eyes flicked toward Tessa.

“That account paid for Mason’s future.”

“It paid Vale Lifestyle Consulting.”

“Tessa arranged investments.”

Tessa shifted in her chair.

“Don’t put this on me.”

Rebecca turned sharply.

“You accepted every transfer.”

“And you approved every purchase.”

Their lawyer raised both hands.

“Not here.”

The judge entered, and everyone stood.

Grace called Elaine first.

Mom walked slowly to the witness chair with her cane.

“Did you knowingly witness a home equity loan?”

“No.”

Rebecca’s lawyer approached her.

“Mrs.

Carver, is that your signature?”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone physically force your hand?”

“No.”

“Then you signed voluntarily.”

Mom looked at Rebecca.

“She told me my son wanted me placed in a facility.

She told me I could stay with my family only if I signed.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“It is the truth you hoped I’d be too ashamed to say.”

Rebecca’s lawyer returned to his seat.

Nolan was called next.

“Did Daniel Carver appear before you?” Grace asked.

“I relied on digital verification.”

“Did you speak to him?”

“No.”

“Who submitted the verification?”

Nolan glanced at Tessa.

“My sister.”

Tessa’s chair scraped.

“You said Rebecca had authorization!”

Rebecca leaned toward her.

“Be quiet.”

Grace displayed a bank security image.

Tessa stood at the verification kiosk wearing sunglasses, holding my license beside the camera while Nolan watched from his office.

“Mr.

Vale, is that your sister?”

“Yes.”

“Did you report the false verification?”

“No.”

The judge ordered Rebecca to surrender the house records and granted me temporary custody of Mason.

Rebecca’s lawyer requested a recess.

In the hallway, Rebecca blocked my path.

“You think you won because an old woman cried?”

“Move.”

“If Mason chooses you, I’ll tell him where his college fund went.”

“I already know you borrowed against his identity.”

“That isn’t what I mean.”

Grace stepped closer.

“What do you mean?”

Rebecca smiled.

“Ask Daniel why there was never enough money for college unless he worked every weekend.”

“You spent it,” I said.

“No.

Your accountant lost it.”

Howard, standing behind us, went still.

Rebecca opened her phone and showed me a statement bearing Howard’s company logo.

It claimed Mason’s original college fund had fallen from $120,000 to less than $9,000 before the home equity line was opened.

Howard took one look.

“That report is false.”

Rebecca slipped the phone into her purse.

“Prove it.”

For one terrible hour, the judge allowed her lawyer to argue that Howard and I had created the debt, then blamed Rebecca during our marriage dispute.

The court postponed its final financial finding.

Outside, Tessa followed Rebecca toward the parking lot.

Rebecca stopped beside her car.

“You’re still useful as long as you remember who gave you everything.”

Tessa’s face hardened.

“You said nobody could trace the accounts.”

“They can trace yours.”

Rebecca drove away, leaving Tessa beside the curb.

That night, an unknown number called me.

“Daniel, it’s Tessa.”

“What do you want?”

“I want immunity.”

“That’s not mine to give.”

“I have Rebecca’s paper ledger.

Every transfer, every false signature, every payment to Nolan.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because she just emptied our business account and bought one plane ticket.”

“For herself?”

May you like

“No,” Tessa whispered.

“The ticket is in Mason’s name.”
