Chapter 2: The Chicken in a Seven-Year-Old's Pocket

Part 2 ⬇️

Maya didn't pick up the bread.

She couldn't.

Her legs gave way and she sank down onto the wet concrete, back against the cold glass, rain still falling hard around her.

She had been out there for two hours.

Inside, she could hear the muffled sound of the television.

Laughter.

The clink of dishes being cleared.

Life going on without her.

Then a small voice, close to the glass.

"Maya?" It was Lily, her little sister, whispering through the gap at the bottom of the curtain.

"I saved you some chicken.

I hid it in my pocket."

Maya pressed her hand flat against the glass.

"Go back inside, Lily.

Don't get in trouble."

"I don't care," Lily whispered.

"Mom's on the phone.

She doesn't know."

A tiny piece of foil appeared under the door gap, pushed through by small fingers.

Maya stared at it and finally let herself cry — not from the cold, but from that small, quiet act of love from a seven-year-old.

Then she heard Sarah's voice, sharp and close.

"LILY.

What are you doing at that door?"

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Fast ones.

Maya pressed her ear to the glass just in time to hear Sarah say something that turned her bl00d to ice — four words spoken low and calm:

"Your father isn't coming home." 😨

What did Sarah mean by that?

Where is Maya's father — and what has Sarah been hiding?

The truth is darker than anyone expected.
