Chapter 2: What the Lockbox Remembered

His son was crouched in the corner of the backyard, arms wrapped around his knees, shaking.
"Hey — hey, buddy, look at me." He dropped to the ground and pulled the boy close.
"What happened?
Who did this?"
The child couldn't speak.
He just pointed toward the house.
Inside, the atmosphere was ice cold.
His wife stood in the kitchen doorway, arms folded, expression unreadable.
Behind her, a man he didn't recognize leaned against the counter like he belonged there.
"You're back early," she said.
No warmth.
No relief.
"Who is he?" the father asked quietly.
"A friend.
It's nothing."
But the boy had stopped shaking only when his father stepped between them.
That said everything.
Later, after the stranger left without a word, the father found the lockbox tucked beneath a loose board in the study closet — the one place she had never let him keep anything.
The brass key was taped to the underside of his son's old toy chest.
Inside the box were documents, photographs, and a folded letter dated three months after he had left for the assignment.
He read the first line.
Then he sat down on the floor and didn't move for a long time.
The letter wasn't from a friend.
And the photographs weren't innocent.
