Chapter 2: The Name That Stopped Everything
Richard stepped closer, still holding those papers, but his hand had started to shake.
"You have no idea what you're doing, old man," he said.
"Those people on that phone can't touch me here."
I didn't answer him.
I just kept the phone to my ear.
The voice on the other end spoke quietly.
Two sentences.
A name and a case number I hadn't heard in fifteen years.
Richard heard it too.
His face went the color of old ash.
"Where did you get that?" he whispered.
I looked at him the way I used to look at men who thought they were protected.
"You ran a shell company through four countries, Richard.
You used Lily's signature on documents she never saw.
We've known about it for eight months."
Behind him, his mother grabbed his arm.
"Richard, don't say another word."
But Richard wasn't listening to her.
He was staring at the cracked phone still recording in my other hand.
"That's not admissible," he said.
"That's nothing."
"It's already uploaded," I said.
"Has been since the moment I walked through your door."
The police chief came around the side of the house then.
He wasn't smiling anymore either.
And that's when Lily said one name — quietly, from behind me — that made Richard's mother let go of his arm and take three steps back.
