Chapter 1: The Boy Left in the Cold

Richard Whitaker had barely stepped through the doorway when he spotted his three-year-old grandson trembling in the cold.

Ethan was barefoot, his torn T-shirt clinging to him, his feet red and filthy.

Richard swept him into his arms.

"You left my grandson barefoot outside for nine hours?"

Claudia lifted her wineglass and pointed at the child.

"This is my house, and he follows my rules."

Ethan buried his face against Richard's overcoat, then looked up at his father.

"Dad…

you knew I was out there."

Mark finally met his son's eyes.

"That was only a mild punishment."

Richard slowly turned toward Claudia.

The rage vanished from his face.

What replaced it was colder.

His hand came across her cheek with a thunderous sl*p.

Claudia crashed to the floor, her wineglass shattering beside her.

Richard looked down at her.

"Your house?

Claudia, you have no idea whose house you are in."
