Chapter 1: The Seat She Gave Away

"Seven years, and you're still jealous."
Those were my husband's words after I asked one simple question: Why had he invited his ex-wife to his forty-third birthday dinner without telling me?
I'm Claire, and for seven years, I'd tried to respect Ethan's history with Vanessa.
I helped raise her fourteen-year-old son, Noah, as part of our family.
I made school pickups when Ethan traveled.
I welcomed Vanessa when Noah needed his mother.
I never asked Ethan to erase his past.
But lately, their relationship had started to feel different.
Private dinners.
Secretive phone calls.
Conversations that stopped the moment I walked into the room.
And whenever I asked questions, Ethan made me feel like the problem.
So I stopped arguing.
I finished preparing his birthday dinner, complete with roast beef, garlic mashed potatoes, and the chocolate cake I'd spent days making.
Then I remembered something Ethan had conveniently left out.
Vanessa's husband, David, might not be as separated from her as Ethan claimed.
I sent David an invitation.
His response made my heart race.
"Please don't tell Vanessa I'm coming."
On Saturday, Ethan proudly seated Vanessa beside him while I served dinner from the far end of the table.
They laughed about their old memories as if I barely existed.
Then the doorbell rang.
Ethan frowned.
"Who else did you invite?"
I stood up calmly.
"Someone you probably weren't expecting."
And suddenly, my husband didn't look so comfortable in his own house.
---
What happens when David walks through that door?
Will Ethan finally have to face what he's been hiding?
