Chapter 2: The Hand That Moved First

Part 2 ⬇️

Her face went pale.

Not the kind of pale that comes from embarrassment.

The kind that comes from knowing you've been caught.

"What is that?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

I didn't answer.

I walked past her, straight to the stairs, and called up to my son.

He came down slowly, still holding his stomach.

Ten years old and hungry in his own home.

I sat him at the table, put a full plate in front of him, and watched him eat without saying a word.

My wife stood in the doorway.

"You're making this into something it isn't."

"Am I?" I set the papers on the counter between us.

She glanced at them.

Then looked away fast.

Too fast.

"How long?" I asked.

She didn't answer.

"How long has he been eating alone up there while the others sat down here?"

Still nothing.

Then my youngest — she's only seven — looked up from her plate and said the words that stopped the room cold.

"Daddy, she does it every time you work late."

My wife's hand came up.

Not toward me.

Toward our daughter.

I stepped between them.

That was the moment I understood exactly what those papers were for.
