Chapter 2: The Woman With Two Faces

Part 2 ⬇️
Detective Ramirez pulled me into the hallway while another officer stayed with Emma.
"Mr.
Mercer." Her voice was low.
"The second house on that footage — we ran the address.
It belonged to a man named Paul Whitfield.
Widower.
One daughter, age five."
I felt the floor shift under me.
"Belonged?"
"He remarried fourteen months ago." She paused.
"His new wife disappeared six weeks after the wedding.
He reported her missing.
Case went cold."
I couldn't speak.
"The little girl on the footage," Ramirez continued, "is his daughter.
She's currently in foster care."
"Why?"
The detective looked at me carefully.
"Because Paul Whitfield d*ed three months ago.
Ruled an accident."
The room felt smaller.
"And the woman he married," I said slowly.
"Do you have a photo?"
Ramirez opened her folder.
I already knew before I looked.
Same eyes.
Different hair.
Different name.
But the same woman who had been sleeping in my house.
I turned toward the living room where Vanessa was still sitting with two officers.
She hadn't tried to run.
She was watching Emma.
Calmly.
Still watching my daughter.

What Vanessa was really planning — and what she did to that other family — is darker than anything Daniel imagined.
