Chapter 2: The Envelope He Was Never Meant to See

The hallway went completely still.

Bennett's face drained of color.

Margot's hand slowly slipped from his arm.

The hospital director — Director Callum Voss — didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

He stepped forward and placed one hand gently on my shoulder, looking at Bennett the way a man looks at something he has already decided to destroy.

"Uncle Callum—" I started.

"Don't," he said quietly.

"I saw everything."

Bennett recovered fast.

That was always his gift.

"Sir, I don't know who you think you are, but this is a private family matter—"

"Private." Director Voss repeated the word like it tasted wrong.

"You froze her accounts.

Eight months pregnant.

And you brought her here." He looked at Margot.

"With this woman."

Margot lifted her chin.

"She fell.

It was an accident."

"The camera disagrees."

The color left Margot's face.

Bennett stepped closer, lowering his voice.

"Callum.

Whatever Tessa has told you about her family — you should ask her why she never mentioned them to me.

Not once.

In three years."

Director Voss looked at me then.

Not with confusion.

With something older.

Sadder.

"She didn't tell you," he said slowly, "because we asked her not to.

Until she was sure."

"Sure of what?" Bennett demanded.

The director reached into his jacket and produced a folded envelope.

He held it without opening it.

"Sure of you."

Bennett stared at the envelope.

His jaw tightened.

May you like

"What is that?"

Nobody answered him.
