Chapter 2: Both Cards

Vanessa laughed for exactly three seconds.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
Put it on speaker without a word.
"Mrs.
Calloway?" The voice was calm, professional.
"This is Raymond Chen.
The emergency injunction has been filed.
All accounts associated with Calloway Group are frozen as of four minutes ago.
Per your instructions."
The room went still.
Daniel's face didn't go pale.
It went gray — the color of a man watching the floor disappear beneath him.
"What did you do," he said.
Not a question.
A whisper.
"I accepted delivery," I said.
"Of papers you sent to my house.
My house, Daniel.
Which triggered the clause my father built into the original trust.
The one your lawyers never read past page forty."
Vanessa stopped smiling.
"You can't—" Daniel started.
"Your card was declined this morning," I said.
"Both of them."
He reached for his phone.
His hands were shaking.
Vanessa turned to him slowly.
Something had shifted in her eyes.
Not love.
Calculation.
"Daniel," she said quietly.
"What does she mean, both cards?"
He didn't answer.
She asked again.
Harder this time.
"Daniel.
May you like
What does she mean?"
That was the moment I knew — Vanessa didn't know everything either.
