Chapter 2: The Note Nobody Was Supposed to Leave
Abby's fingers touched the edge of the bundle.
Then she pulled her hand back.
She stepped away from the dresser, pressed both palms against her cart, and stood there breathing hard.
Her eyes were still wet.
But she didn't take a single dollar.
Instead, she reached into her cart, pulled out a small notepad, and wrote something down.
She tore the page out and placed it carefully on top of the cash.
Then she finished cleaning the room and left.
Behind the monitor, Julian sat very still.
In thirty-one tests across eight years, not one person had left a note.
He walked to the bedroom and picked it up.
*"I saw this.
I didn't touch it.
If it was left here by mistake, I hope it finds its way back to whoever needs it.
— A."*
Julian read it twice.
Then he did something he hadn't done in years.
He sat down on the edge of the bed and said nothing for a long time.
What he didn't know yet was that Abby had been let go from her last three cleaning jobs.
Always the same reason given: *not a good fit.*
Always signed off by the same name.
A name Julian recognized the moment his assistant placed Abby's file on his desk an hour later.
His jaw tightened.
"Get her back here," he said quietly.
"Now."
