Chapter 2: The Face That Was Never Supposed to Be There

Her husband's arm was still raised when the first investigator reached him.
He didn't lower it.
He laughed.
"Do you know who I am?" he said.
"Do you have any idea whose house you just walked into?"
Her father stopped three feet away from him and looked at him the way a man looks at something he has already finished with.
"I know exactly who you are," he said.
"I've known for fourteen months."
The room shifted.
Somewhere near the back, a champagne glass hit the floor.
Her mother-in-law stepped forward.
"This is a private event.
Whatever you think you have—"
"Sit down." The investigator beside her father didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
"Ma'am.
Sit.
Down."
She sat.
Her husband's sister grabbed her phone.
An officer stepped in front of her before she could unlock it.
"That device is evidence."
That was when the screaming started.
Not from her.
She hadn't made a sound since the doors opened.
She was still on the marble floor, one hand pressed to her side, watching the family that had spent three years dismantling her life finally come apart in real time.
Then her father knelt beside her.
He didn't speak.
He just took her hand.
And she felt something she hadn't felt in so long she almost didn't recognize it.
Safe.
But across the room, her husband had gone completely still.
Because he'd just seen something that made the color drain from his face — a face she knew.
Someone she recognized too.
Someone who was never supposed to be in that room.
