Chapter 2: The Photograph Taken Three Weeks Ago

Part 2:
Vincent's hand found her elbow.
Not rough.
Deliberate.
"Take my arm," he said quietly.
"Smile.
Look at me like we're having a conversation."
Mave did exactly that.
Her heart was slamming against her ribs.
"Who is he?" she said through her smile.
"Don't look at him."
"Vincent—"
"I said don't look."
She felt his body shift slightly, angling to block her from the stranger's sightline.
Around them, the orchestra played on.
No one noticed.
No one ever noticed anything at these events until it was too late.
Leo appeared on her left without a word.
Vincent spoke without moving his lips.
"North exit.
Two minutes."
Leo was gone again.
Mave kept her eyes on Vincent's chest.
"This is about the books, isn't it."
A pause.
One second too long.
"We'll talk in the car."
"The $30,000.
Someone inside the organization found out I flagged it."
His jaw tightened.
That was answer enough.
"Mave." His voice dropped lower.
"There are things about that account you don't know yet."
"Then tell me."
"Not here."
He finally looked at her.
Fully.
And what she saw in his face was not the controlled mask from the office.
It was something closer to fear.
"That man has a photograph," Vincent said.
"Of you.
Taken three weeks ago.
Outside your apartment building."
Mave stopped breathing.
"He doesn't work for a rival family," Vincent said.
"He works for someone inside mine."
