Chapter 2: What She Said She Deserved

Part 2 ⬇️

My hands wouldn't stop shaking as I opened the folder.

The first page was a custody transfer document — signed in my name, witnessed and notarized — giving Vanessa sole legal guardianship of Sophie.

I hadn't signed a single word of it.

"Where did you get a notary?" I looked up at her.

"Who helped you do this?"

Vanessa said nothing.

Her jaw was locked tight.

One of the guests — my cousin Mark — stepped closer and looked over my shoulder.

His face went pale.

"Daniel…

I've seen that notary stamp before.

That's the same one on your mother's estate papers."

The room went dead silent.

Sophie tugged my sleeve.

"Daddy, the lady who came to the house with the papers…

Vanessa called her Aunt Rena."

My stomach dropped.

Rena was my late mother's personal attorney.

I turned back to Vanessa.

"You used my mother's lawyer to forge custody documents on my six-year-old daughter?"

Her chin lifted slightly.

"You were never going to give me what I deserved."

"What you *deserved*?"

She took one slow step forward, and her voice dropped to something I'd never heard from her before — flat, cold, and completely without regret.

"Your mother promised me everything.

Then she changed her will and left it all to Sophie.

So yes, Daniel.

I made sure that little girl would never stand between me and what's mine."

Sophie buried her face in my chest and started to cry again.
