Chapter 2: What the Doctor Found

Daniel reached Elena before the paramedics did.
She was conscious.
Barely.
Her fingers were curled around one of the safety net's steel cables like she had decided, somewhere in the fall, that she was not going to let go.
"Elena." He dropped to his knees beside her.
"Don't move.
Stay with me."
Her lips parted.
"Daniel…
she said…"
"Don't talk.
Please."
"She said you already knew."
He went still.
The paramedics pushed through.
Daniel stepped back, but he couldn't unhear it.
*She said you already knew.*
Knew what?
At the hospital, a doctor pulled him aside while Elena was being examined.
"Mr.
Whitmore." The doctor's voice was careful.
"There's something you need to be aware of before we proceed."
"Is she going to be all right?"
"Physically, yes.
She was very lucky." A pause.
"But there's a condition we discovered.
Something she may not have told you."
Daniel stared at him.
"What condition?"
The doctor glanced at the folder in his hands.
"Mr.
Whitmore…
Elena Ramirez is pregnant."
The hallway went completely silent around him.
Behind him, his phone lit up.
A message from Victoria.
*We need to talk before you say anything to anyone.
I know things about her you don't.
Come home first.
Please.*
Daniel read it once.
Then turned it face-down against his leg.
