Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

“You have thirty days to leave—and tomorrow, my lawyer is changing every document that gives you access to my affairs.”

Mark’s face tightened.

“What documents?”

“The ones you’ve been taking from Robert’s study.”

Lisa dropped her fork.

Tyler stared at his father.

Mark stood so quickly his chair tipped backward.

“You’re confused, Mom.

This is exactly why we need to help manage things.”

“I never asked you to manage anything.”

“You forget bills.

You misplace keys.”

“No,” I said.

“Tyler hid my keys—and you used every prank to make me doubt myself.”

Lisa whispered, “Mark, tell her.”

He turned on her.

“Stay out of this.”

That was when I understood her fear.

I walked to the sideboard and removed an envelope I had found beneath Mark’s jacket that morning.

Inside was a property form bearing my name and a signature that looked almost like mine.

I placed it beside the ruined cake.

“Would anyone like to explain this?”

Mark went pale.

Lisa covered her mouth, then looked straight at me.

“He told me you signed it,” she said.

“He said the house would belong to us by Friday.”

Before Mark could stop her, Lisa reached into her purse and pulled out a second document—one containing a secret none of them expected me to discover.
