Chapter 1: The Man They Called Trash

"The board is waiting for your approval to release the funds."
Those words stopped my wedding cold.
Just seconds earlier, my future mother-in-law had pointed at my father and called him trash.
My bride, Vanessa, had laughed along with her.
And 500 guests had watched my father, Arthur, stand alone near the entrance in his worn jacket, clutching a tiny gift box.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
This was the woman I had promised to spend my life with.
This was the family I was about to join.
And they were mocking the man who had helped shape who I was.
I stepped away from the altar.
I didn't care about the decorations, the guests, or the ceremony waiting to begin.
I reached Dad and gently took the little box from his hands.
"Dad...
let's go," I whispered.
Vanessa came after me, grabbed my arm, and glared at me.
"You'd cancel our wedding over him?"
I was about to answer when the wedding planner burst into the ballroom.
She was breathless and pale.
She rushed past Diane and Vanessa as if neither woman existed.
Then she stopped in front of my father.
"Mr.
Bennett!" she gasped.
"The board is waiting for your approval to release the funds."
Nobody moved.
Diane's smug expression vanished.

Vanessa let go of me.
And suddenly, the tiny gift box in my father's hands wasn't the only thing people wanted to understand.
